According to a 2021 analysis by WalletHub, property tax rates are higher in Texas than 43 other states. Only New Jersey, Illinois, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, and Wisconsin have higher tax rates than Texas’ 1.80% effective property tax rate. So why do hundreds of thousands of people make Texas their new home state every year? In addition to housing affordability and a relatively low cost of living, Texas is among nine other states that have no state income tax.
